Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Tree planting is a critical environmental practice that mitigates climate change, combats desertification, and enhances urban aesthetics. In Kano Municipal LGA, Kano State, the need for tree planting is particularly urgent due to deforestation, urban expansion, and climate challenges. Public Relations (PR) can play a pivotal role in encouraging tree planting by raising awareness, engaging stakeholders, and promoting community participation.

PR strategies such as environmental campaigns, partnerships with local organizations, and the use of persuasive messaging have been shown to drive behavioral change and increase tree-planting efforts (Yusuf & Mohammed, 2023). This study examines how PR can encourage tree planting in Kano Municipal LGA to address environmental challenges and promote sustainability.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the benefits of tree planting, participation rates in Kano Municipal LGA remain low due to inadequate awareness and cultural barriers. While PR campaigns have proven effective in promoting environmental causes in other contexts, their role in encouraging tree planting in Kano Municipal LGA is underexplored. This study investigates how PR strategies can foster tree-planting initiatives in the region.
